CrossFit Olympic Lifting
I was never an athlete. In fact, I was the opposite of athlete. I was skinny, uncoordinated, and weak. The closest I came to athleticism was my short-lived hockey career. I was a goalie in Pee Wee hockey, and the only thing higher than my “goals against” average was my penalty minutes… Not much more to say than that. Except maybe that when it came to sports I was a complete turd out there… I mean seriously, I was just terrible. To be honest, all I ever wanted was to be a famous guitarist, see the world and play in a kick ass band… and I came pretty close. I signed my first record deal in 2003. I spent the next five years living my dream… I had a top 30 hit in the United States, toured all over the world with some of the hugest bands on the planet and played in one of the best live bands anyone had ever seen. But, as I got older, I knew I couldn’t do this forever, and I never had enough financial success as a musician to continue doing it. So, I decided to switch gears. As soon as I came off tour, I put on 20 pounds (not the good kind) and felt older than I had ever felt. I guess the crazy live shows and ghetto gym workouts that we did on tour were keeping me in ok shape after all. We put a lot of effort into our workouts on tour as our live show was so physically demanding. We carried dumbbells around with our gear and a bench (actually 2 milk crates and a pillow) and tried to work out as often as we could.
So after coming off of the road I tried everything from Gym memberships, cardio machines, mixed martial arts to hot yoga and I never seemed to make any real progress. I even hired a personal trainer. I learned a lot of great technique and made solid gains, but found the cost of a personal trainer prohibitive. As well, I found it hard to motivate myself to do the work when my trainer wasn’t standing over me and the results reflected that. So, I gave up. I started to put on more weight and was feeling, for the first time in my life, my age. That is when my wife decided to enroll us into CrossFit. I could not believe the energy and excitement in the classes. I found myself being very strongly motivated by others around me in a supportive, yet competitive environment. It was… weird… and we were hooked. I started to get really addicted to the classes, the people and most importantly, the results. I was seeing strength gains, speed gains and rapidly improving technique… but I could see the hard work paying off in the mirror as well.
My love of CrossFit evolved and I wanted to improve not only my own training but also how to help others with their training. That was the catalyst for getting my CrossFit Level 1 Certification, as well as the Crossfit Endurance Certification and Crossfit Kettlebell Certification. On my business travels, I could not go without a class. I made certain to drop in and try out as many CrossFit programs all over Canada, Europe and the United States as I could. After working out in over 30 different boxes, it was obvious that there was something to learn from all of these gyms. They all had something unique and great about them but I felt like I had not yet found the “perfect box”. That is when the bell went off in my head. I knew that a box was needed that had it all. A CrossFit gym that had the large space, a great location, top of the line equipment (and enough of it), an amazing training team, top notch programming, and input from a strong community. It was only natural that I bring my dream to others to share in. To be part of the absolute best CrossFit experience so we could all enjoy it and call it our own.
